June 1, 2003 To Whom It May Concern: I am writing this letter of reference for Dell Deaton who I have known since early 2002. My first contact with him was as web master of his web site, www.divorcePeers.com. I had visited his site and was impressed with the content and design. His prompt response to my question encouraged other questions, which led us to develop a relationship that is both personal and professional. Dell's site has been a great benefit to our Divorce Recovery program in terms of the promotion he has provided for us. Based on the relationship, which started through divorcePeers.com, I asked Dell if he would join me as co-facilitator of the Divorce Recovery Program at First Presbyterian Church of Northville. We had the opportunity to work together in the most recent class at the end of April. It was a pleasure to have him on the team as he brought a wealth of research, information and knowledge to the group. He also demonstrated some special skill in bringing out the bashful participants and helping them relate their personal story to the pre-planned topics. He demonstrated skill in managing each member's "floor time," not letting anyone dominate and encouraging everyone to speak. His competent approach was enough for us to invite him to be the presenter for one of the programs. He developed and researched the topic and his talk was so well received that he is being invited back to speak as a regular part of the program. Because people come to this group from many different points in their divorces and different backgrounds, it was helpful to have input in planning our follow-up activities and supplemental material for each week. He also displayed an intuitive sense of those folks whose support needs weren't met in the weekly meetings, and needed more one on one time. He found the time to personally provide it. He was consistently neutral, non-judgmental, and helped people to find their own answers rather than to give them advice. Based on the experience here at Northville Presbyterian I would recommend him to anyone attempting to put together a program involving personal approaches to growth and learning, especially those that may be sensitive in nature.
